SOLD OUT!!
A small but vibrant African American community was established long before Buffalo's incorporation as a city in 1832. Although this community grew slowly over the next 200 years, it helped develop the social, artistic, religious, cultural, educational and entrepreneurial institutions that contributed to the cultural enrichment of Buffalo's African American citizens, as well as the city's larger, diverse population.
This community produced innovators and creators whose talents and abilities have been recognized locally and, in many instances, nationally. Buffalo's African American community's deep reservoir of musical talent spans generations and musical genres. Many were associated with Buffalo's legendary Colored Musician's Club, Little Harlem, Dan Montgomery's and other night spots. Celebrate Black History Month with speaker Barbara Nevergold, President of the Afro American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier and Co-founder of the Uncrowned Queens Institute, as she presents a portrait of some of Buffalo's musical greats: Dodo Greene; Al Tinney; Rick James; Elvin Shepard; Raymond Jackson, Julia Johnson and others, whose contributions to their craft provided models for their younger counterparts, brought pleasure to diverse audiences and continued a musical tradition that has sustained African Americans since earlier times.
Music: The George Scott Big Band from the Colored Musicians Club
