Sunday In The Cemetery Chapel Concert & Lecture Series

January 8th, 2012 2 PM

The History of the Buffalo & Erie County Library

Anne Conable, the Special Projects Coordinator for the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library System Office of Development & Communications, will give a glimpse into the past - and the future - of our library system. In 2011, the Library celebrates 175 years of service to the Western New York community. After the 1825 opening of the Erie Canal, the young city of Buffalo was on a meteoric growth pattern...but it had no public library. In 1836, a group called the Young Men's Association was formed specifically to create a library for Buffalo. It soon became the booming city's preeminent cultural and educational institution "for the improvement of our citizens." Generations of leaders, benefactors and staff members built the Library and its treasured collections, and generations of local residents have used and valued its resources.  With its history a reflection of our community, the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library stands poised for a very different upcoming 175 years!

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Buffalo Flute Club, a newly-formed organization founded to promote the enjoyment of the flute among flutists and other interested people through concerts, master classes, flute fairs and other events.

Seating is limited; reservations are required. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling the Forest Lawn office at 716.885.1600.
